Anthony is committed to curbing the effects of climate change, protecting Maryland’s natural resources, including the Chesapeake Bay, and ensuring the quality of our air, water, and land for future generations. From investing in clean-energy to protecting our ecosystems to ensuring environmental justice in every community, Anthony will work with Democrats and Republicans who are willing to address our biggest environmental challenges.
As Lieutenant Governor and partner in one of the most environment-friendly administrations, Anthony championed and supported several significant environmental initiatives. He helped pass the Maryland Offshore Wind Energy Act of 2013, which will help to produce new clean energy. He worked to set high goals for EmPOWER Maryland for energy demand reduction. He supported Maryland’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a ten-state-effort to reduce CO2 emissions from electricity generation plants. And he partnered with a coalition of stakeholders to source more of Maryland’s energy from solar facilities.
To ensure access to clean, safe water for all Marylanders, Anthony supported giving our ten most-impacted counties the local authority and autonomy to make the necessary infrastructure improvements to address stormwater runoff and meet our federal clean water permit obligations. He supported reducing our reliance on septic systems and upgrading our 25 largest wastewater treatment plants, planted a record number of cover crops that prevent harmful nutrients from entering the Bay and its tributaries; and adopted an Oyster Restoration and Aquaculture Development Plan that helped to double Maryland’s native oyster population.
As your environmental advocate in Congress, Anthony will:
- Support tax incentives to build a clean energy economy for the future, such as the Production Tax Credit that makes renewables cost-competitive with dirtier alternatives;
- Work to restore the scope of the Clean Water Act to ensure that all of America’s waterways are protected;
- Advocate for the full implementation of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan to reduce carbon pollution from the nation’s biggest emitters, reduce energy waste and consumption, expand clean energy, prepare for global warming’s impacts on our communities and natural resources, and lead global efforts to address climate change; and
- Improve the environment and public health in communities disproportionately burdened by environmental harms and risks; and address environmental injustice by building capacity and promoting collaborative problem solving in disproportionately burdened communities.
Anthony understands that we need leaders who will focus on accountability and expand the environmental coalition. Leaders who understand that environmental preservation and job creation are not mutually exclusive. We need leaders who believe that investments in a healthy and sustainable environment is a moral imperative.
